How to link Aadhaar with PAN

In 2017, it was announced that existing PAN and Aadhaar had to be mandatorily linked irrespective of whether one files income tax returns (ITR) or not. The government, in the Budget 2017, introduced a law which made it a must for everyone with a PAN to link it with their Aadhaar. If anyone is applying new PAN today, he/she is required to provide his/her Aadhaar details in the form itself. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline to link PAN and Aadhaar to June 30, 2018, from the earlier deadline of March 31, 2018.

Although you now have more time to link your PAN and Aadhaar, it is better you do it as soon as possible to avoid a situation where your PAN becomes invalid. However, if you have filed your ITR without linking PAN and Aadhaar, you must link the same before June 30, 2108 so that your ITR is not rejected by the tax department for processing.

First of all let’s understand concept of PAN and AADHAAR Card.

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a code that acts as an identification for individuals, families and corporates (Indian and Foreign as well), especially those who pay Income Tax.

It is a unique, 10-character alpha-numeric identifier, issued to all judicial entities identifiable under the Indian Income Tax Act, 1961. The Income Tax PAN code and its linked card are issued under Section 139A of the Income Tax Act. It is issued by the Indian Income Tax Department under the supervision of the Central Board for Direct Taxes (CBDT) and it also serves as an important proof of identification. It is also issued to foreign nationals (such as investors) subject to a valid visa , and hence that PAN is not acceptable as a proof of Indian citizenship. (source : wikipedia)

Aadhaar Card is Issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (or UIDAI), the card is a 12 digit number that serves as proof of identity as well as proof of address. Aadhar card is a personal identification card that contains the individual’s biometric and demographic information
