Now Pay using WhatsApp Pay : Here is how to use it
Indians now have one
more avenue to make payment using UPI, WhatsApp Pay. WhatsApp Pay is now
available for users of the messaging app in India. WhatsApp had begun testing
the feature long back in 2018 with over 1 million users. Now in November 2020,
it is granted approval by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
The announcement came a day after National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)
said that it has given a nod to WhatsApp to roll out a UPI-based payment system
in India.
ICICI Bank, State
Bank of India, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank – and debutant Jio Payments Bank have
enabled its backend infrastructure to facilitate transfer of funds using
WhatsApp pay
Total WhatsApp users
in India are in vicinity of 40 Crs, but initially WhatsApp Pay’s services will
come with curbs in the first phase, as the UPI
infrastructure may not be able handle sudden influx of volumes if WhatsApp Pay is
enabled for all its users.
NPCI will be issuing
only 20 million (2 Crs) new virtual addresses to WhatsApp Pay for new user on
boarding.
Expressing his
thoughts about launching WhatsApp Pay in India, Facebook founder Mark
Zuckerberg said, “We’ve been working on this with the National Payments
Corporation of India, to make sure it’s secure and reliable. And we’ve built it
using India’s Unified Payments Interface, which makes it easy for anyone to
instantly accept payments across different apps -- and for companies to provide
people with great services.
“With UPI, India has
created something truly special and is opening up a world of opportunities for
micro and small businesses that are the backbone of the Indian economy. India
is the first country to do anything like this. I’m glad we were able to support
this effort and work together to help achieve a more digital India. I want to
thank all our partners who’ve made this possible” he added.
