3…2…1 and Lift Off !! India’s heaviest satellite GSAT- 11 launched successfully... Know more on the “BIG Bird”

GSAT, satellite, digital india

When India was asleep, the country’s heaviest satellite GSAT-11 was launched in space from the French space port of Kourou in South America. The launch was scheduled at 2.07 am IST on Wednesday 5th December 2018. The satellite, weighing 5,854 kg, is the heaviest Indian-made equipment till now put into space.

This was second attempt for this satellite as first attempt was planned on 25th May 2018 but due to some technical difficulties launch was delayed.

GSAT-11 is meant to provide multi-spot beam coverage over India’s mainland and nearby islands. It uses multiple spot beams to increase internet speed and connectivity. A spot beam is a satellite signal  that is concentrated in power so as to cover only a limited geographical area on earth. The narrower the beam more is the power. This satellite will reuse beams (signal) several times in order to cover entire of India. This is in contrast to earlier satellite like INSAT which uses a board single beam. Each solar panel of GSAT is over 4 meters wide

The satellite will enable much faster internet services across India especially in rural area. GSAT-11 is a high-throughput satellite that carries 40 transponders in Ku-band and Ka-band frequencies and is capable of providing high broadband connectivity with up to 14 gigabyte per second (GBPS) data transfer speed. The life of the satellite will be of 15 years and will give boost to ‘Digital India’ mission of government.

Dr. Sivan, Chairman, ISRO said it will meet most of the requirements of providing broadband connectivity to rural and inaccessible village panchayats under BharatNet which is part of the Digital India initiative.

Enabling in-flight Internet and village web services are the government's other goals. By enabling rural high-speed connectivity the HTS satellite also promises to bridge the urban-rural digital divide.

The space agency described GSAT-11 as a "forerunner in the series of advanced communication satellites with multi-spot beam antenna coverage" over the mainland and islands. GSAT-11 will play a vital role in providing broadband services across the country. It will also provide a platform to demonstrate new generation applications.

Prime Minister Modi took to Twitter to congratulate ISRO scientists.

90% of the hardware for this satellite was sourced from Indian companies. The spacecraft now goes around Earth in a temporary oval orbit. Over the coming days engineers will remotely fire its motors and nudge it in four stages into a circular 'geostationary' orbit almost 36,000 km away and settle it at 74° E over India. GSAT-11 is third in series of 4 high throughput satellites (GSAT-19 GSAT-29, GSAT-11 and GSAT-20) that aims to provide broadband connectivity across India with over 100 GBPS speed.
