No more Free Calls on Jio. Read more to know why?

Reliance Jio heralded new era in India telecom industry when it announced “Life Time” free calls. Within 2 years it became industry leading telecom player surpassing growth of industry incumbent like Airtel and Vodafone. Its voice calls was free whether between 2 Jio numbers or with other telecom providers

However, it all ends today as far as “free” calling is concerned. Beginning today, Reliance Jio will charge, what is called as an ‘interconnect fees’ for calls made to non-Jio mobile phones. Interconnect User Charge (IUC) is the cost that is paid by one mobile telecom operator to another when its subscriber makes outgoing mobile calls to the customer of the other operator. The charge is 6 paise per minute.

However, all incoming calls to Jio mobiles, all outgoing calls from Jio to Jio mobiles, and all outgoing calls from Jio mobiles to landline phones continue to be free of charge, it said in a statement.

Till date, as per statement by Reliance, during last 3 years, company paid a whopping Rs 13,500 Crores to rivals such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea as IUC

Now What ?

To compensate IUC that will be charged to customers, Jio has came up with IUC plans with extra data benefits. Those are listed below:

--Rs 10 plan will offer 124 minutes of IUC minutes to non-Jio numbers and 1GB data.

--Rs 20 plan will offer 249 minutes of IUC minutes to non-Jio numbers and 2GB data.

--Rs 50 plan will offer 656 minutes of IUC minutes to non-Jio numbers and 5GB data.

--Rs 100 plan will offer 1,362 minutes of IUC minutes to non-Jio numbers and 10GB data.

When will the IUC charges end?

According to the current regulation by TRAI, the zero termination charge regime will kick in from January 1, 2020. So users are expected to bear these additional charges until then.
